Fun and Functional Ways to Display House Address Numbers

One of the easiest ways to increase your home’s curb appeal is to enhance first impressions by adding a creative display of your home’s address.
We gathered insights from a few interior designers and home improvement specialists on how decorative house numbers on your home can be both fun and functional.
What’s Right for You?
“Thoughts of how and where to display house numbers are often a last minute consideration for many homeowners,” said Leigh Meadows-McAlpin, an interior designer at Dwelling Interiors & Design.
Meadows-McAlpin suggested two primary things to consider when selecting and placing house numbers:

Visibility from the street
Architectural style of the home

“House numbers are one of the final elements in the completion of a new home or a renovation project and it’s actually an important detail, one that can provide the perfect finishing touches to any home,” she explained.

Before you begin, take a moment to consider the aesthetic or theme of your home. Make sure to select a style of house number that creatively complements your home rather than clashes with your existing décor and exterior home features.
Metallic Madness

Juan Carlos Daetz, marketing director for MAX Warehouse, a home and garden specialty company, suggested incorporating large metal numbers for an “eye-popping visual” against the exterior of your home.
This is typically more appropriate for modern homes and is complemented by a darker brick or wood background.
Meadows-McAlpin advised to ensure the finish of the metal corresponds with your home’s other decorative hardware, such as doorknockers and knobs. This will create a more cohesive look to your home.
“Take an artful approach and have your house numbers custom-made by a local artisan, such as numbers that are stencil-cut into wood or a sheet of metal,” she added.
If you want the metal numbers to pop even more, consider mounting them on a wooden plaque, for a polished yet industrial finish to your project.
How Illuminating

If you live on a dark street, your guests might get lost searching for your house number if it’s not prominently displayed. Having illuminated house numbers is an easy fix to this situation.
However, if you’re looking for a more 21 st century approach to the traditional architectural lighting over your house numbers, consider purchasing a mounting with LED lights attached to the back, providing its own light source.
Surrounding Modern Lighting & Interiors has a collection of Luxello modern bronze illuminated house numbers that give off white or amber LED light.
The number signs are flexible, customizable and offer more visibility than traditional architectural lighting, making the house numbers a fun, but functional addition to your entryway.
In addition, the bronze color gives an industrial impression that will complement any modern-style home.
Country Charm

Ray Wheeler, founder of The Paint Manager, recommends a rustic design for those who fantasize about farmsteads.
It’s as simple as using rustic or reclaimed wood as a plaque and mounting your choice of house numbers to the surface, capturing the charm of the country with a few coats of paint on a few wooden slates.
Refreshing Living has easy-to-follow instructions and a supply list for everything needed to complete the craft.
On top of the DIY instructions, Wheeler recommends sanding down the wood after painting so the colors are a little more muted. This will give your wood a weathered and rustic look, almost like an old-fashioned barn. To finish it off, apply a light stain over the wood to complete the rustic theme.
Functional Florals

Put your house numbers to work by fastening them to a functional flower planter. What better way to welcome visitors than adding a pop of color and life to your porch?
You can use plywood, found at any hardware store – or if your green thumb is inspiring you to go green, consider using reclaimed wood for this project.
Shades of Blue Interiors has a great tutorial that breaks down the DIY process perfectly.
With just a few nails, some paint, address numbers and flowers, you’re able to transform your house number display into a focal point of your entryway.
If you struggle to keep up with fresh flowers, substitute them with faux flowers. That way, you won’t have to remember to water them and they’ll last longer than a season.
Personalized Plaque

This one might be my favorite! I’m getting married this summer and would love to display my new last initial. In addition, it makes it that much easier for friends and family to find your home.
A Little Craft in Your Day has an easy step-by-step process that walks you through the project.
Supplies are easy to find at any local hardware or craft store. You just need a large wooden letter, paint and all-surface or wood glue.
This craft is also fun because you can personalize it any way you want. Mix it up with different paint colors and patterns or add a small floral touch to your letter, like in the picture above.
Where the Green Grass Grows

The grass is always greener on the other side, so opt for a better way to display your address by using nature’s best assets.
A Beautiful Mess has a great DIY tutorial on how to create this unique house number display. It’s a design that will definitely bring life to your entryway.
Grab some house numbers, faux grass, plywood or a shadow box display, some wood glue, paint and wood screws and you’re ready to go.
The result is a contemporary design, perfect for nature lovers.
We recommend using a shadow box display for anyone who doesn’t want to work with too many power tools or screws. We also recommend using bright white house numbers for this craft, making sure they pop against the green background and making it easier for people to read from the street.
Get Creative
At the end of the day, make sure that fun doesn’t get in the way of function and that you’re still able to see your house number from the street. Before you begin, make sure to check with your city code to make sure you’re meeting any regulations.
While you’re outside, consider updating your porch using colors and designs that complement your new creative house number display.
